Survival Hunter PvP Guide

Survival is a control-and-utility arena spec. Its talents lean into trapping (Improved Wing Clip, Entrapment, Deterrence, Readiness for a second set of cooldowns) and Expose Weakness-style scaling, giving you a lockdown game more than a burst game. Readiness resetting your traps, Rapid Fire and Deterrence is the signature Survival tool.

Overview

You win by kiting and CC: chain traps and slows, protect your healer, and grind the enemy down while never letting a melee stick to you.

Strengths

  • +Readiness resets traps and cooldowns for double disengage/CC
  • +Best kiting and lockdown toolkit of the three specs
  • +Strong utility scaling (Expose Weakness) in a cleave

Weaknesses

  • Lower raw burst than BM/MM
  • Relies on landing traps and staying at range to shine

Stat priority & caps (arena)

Stat caps (arena)

StatCap
Resilience490 rating
Hit Rating (vs players)79 rating
  • Resilience: No hard cap — ~350 is the 2v2 entry point, 490+ is competitive. Reduces crit chance, crit damage and DoT damage taken.
  • Hit Rating (vs players): 5% (~79 rating) caps yellow special-attack misses against same-level players. White dual-wield misses stay high but matter less in arena.

Recommended talent build

7/20/34 · Raid

The Expose Weakness build: deep Survival converts your agility into attack power for every physical DPS in the raid, with Marksmanship support talents filled for personal damage. The more melee your raid runs, the better this build gets.

Control & kite

  1. 1Open with a Freezing Trap on the healer; keep Serpent Sting and Wing Clip pressure.
  2. 2Scatter Shot → re-trap or burst with Aimed/Arcane on the kill target.
  3. 3Kite melee with Frost Trap, Wing Clip and Concussive; use the dead zone in reverse.
  4. 4Readiness to reset traps + Rapid Fire + Deterrence for a second full setup.
  5. 5Deterrence + trinket + trap to peel when trained.

Survival is the disengage master. Use Readiness to double up on traps and Deterrence, chain CC the healer, and slow-kite the melee to death. Your damage is steadier and lower than BM/MM, so the game is about control and outlasting rather than a single burst kill.

Best professions (PvP)

Common mistakes

  • Using Readiness for damage instead of banking it for a trap/Deterrence reset.
  • Standing still to DPS and letting a melee close the gap.
  • Wasting traps on cooldown instead of on the healer during a kill attempt.

FAQ

Is Survival good in arena?

It's a control/utility pick rather than a burst spec. BM is the default, but Survival's Readiness + trapping lockdown is strong in kite-heavy comps.

What does Readiness do for me?

Instantly resets your trap, Rapid Fire, Deterrence and disengage cooldowns — effectively a second full setup in one fight.
