Protection Paladin PvE Guide

Protection Paladin is the king of AoE tanking in TBC. Consecration, Holy Shield and a Righteous Fury-boosted holy threat aura let you hold threat on many mobs at once — no Warrior or Druid comes close on trash and add-heavy pulls. You also passively return mana to your healers through Blessing of Sanctuary and Spiritual Attunement, and bring the full Blessing/Aura kit.

Overview

You play a Consecration + Holy Shield + Judgement threat rotation, keeping Righteous Fury up and managing mana (which is your resource) rather than Rage.

Strengths

  • +Best AoE threat in the game — multi-target tanking on trash and adds
  • +Returns mana to healers (Spiritual Attunement) and brings Blessings/Auras
  • +Very smooth, mana-fueled threat rotation

Weaknesses

  • Single-target threat below a Warrior's on some fights
  • No taunt-adjacent tricks Warriors have; mana-dependent under pressure

Defense (crit immunity)490 defense
Hit Rating142 rating
Expertise26 expertise
  • Defense (crit immunity): 490 defense skill makes you uncrittable by a raid boss (removes the 5.6% crit chance). Resilience or class talents (e.g. a Druid's Survival of the Fittest) substitute for part of it — this is the first tanking goal before any other stat.
  • Hit Rating: 9% (142 rating) yellow-attack cap. Not a survival stat, but it sharply steadies threat by removing missed taunts and abilities.
  • Expertise: 26 expertise (≈102 rating) removes boss dodge; higher values chip at frontal parry to reduce parry-haste. Threat/uptime stat, taken after crit immunity.

Recommended talent build

The Ardent Defender tanking build: uncrushable-focused Protection to Avenger's Shield with Redoubt, Holy Shield uptime and one-hand spec, dipping Retribution for kill-threat via Benediction-line efficiency. The AoE-tank standard for dungeons and raids alike.

Threat rotation

  1. 1Keep Righteous Fury up; pull with Avenger's Shield onto the pack.
  2. 2Consecration down and Holy Shield up on cooldown for AoE threat + block.
  3. 3Judgement (Righteousness) and Seal of Righteousness/Vengeance for threat.
  4. 4Reach the crit-immunity/defense cap and block values for uncrushability.
  5. 5Manage mana (your threat resource); use Divine Plea/pots on long fights.

Prot Paladin tanking is about AoE threat and uptime: Consecration and Holy Shield rolling, Righteous Fury always on, and Judgement/Seal cycling. Reach crit immunity and enough defense/block to be uncrushable first, then stack stamina and threat stats. Watch mana — it's your Rage — and lean on Spiritual Attunement to sustain it while taking hits.

  • Tanking before hitting crit immunity / uncrushable (lethal spike risk).
  • Letting Consecration or Holy Shield lapse and losing AoE threat.
  • Running out of mana and dropping threat on long fights.

FAQ

Are Protection Paladins good tanks?

They're the best AoE/multi-target tanks in TBC and return mana to healers. Warriors still edge them on some single-target fights, but for trash and add-heavy bosses, Prot Paladin is unmatched.

What's the first gearing goal?

Crit immunity plus enough defense/block to be uncrushable, then stamina and threat. See the stat caps below.
