Overview
Shatterplay is a caster-control setup comp built around the Shatter kill window. The Frost Mage freezes a target with Frost Nova or a Water Elemental's Freeze, then dumps a guaranteed-crit Frostbolt plus Ice Lance while the Shadow Priest stacks Mind Blast, Shadow Word: Death, and Shadow Word: Pain onto the same target. Everything is scripted toward one clean burst window.
What separates it from RMP is the second instant CC: the Druid's Cyclone and the priest's Psychic Scream give you two ways to remove the enemy healer without a cast, layered on top of Polymorph, Counterspell, and Silence. You out-control the enemy rather than out-tempo them, chaining CC on the healer so nothing gets healed while the mage and priest delete a DPS.
Win condition
Lock the enemy healer out with Silence + Counterspell + Cyclone while the mage freezes the kill target and lands a Shatter combo (Frost Nova → Frostbolt → Ice Lance, all crits) stacked with the priest's Mind Blast and Shadow Word: Death before the CC breaks.
Strengths
- +Double instant CC — Cyclone plus Psychic Scream — layered on Sheep and Counterspell for total board control
- +The Shatter combo deletes a target inside one Frost Nova window
- +Silence + Counterspell locks a healer out of the game while the kill lands
Weaknesses
- −No hard peel for the priest — trained melee that stick can collapse the setup
- −Warlock spell-lock and Fear shut down the mage and priest at the worst moments
Cooldown timeline
Sheep or Cyclone the healer to open. Mage Frostbolts the kill target, drops Frost Nova (or Elemental Freeze), and fires the Shatter combo with Icy Veins up; priest weaves Mind Blast → Shadow Word: Death and refreshes Shadow Word: Pain. Silence and Counterspell shut down the healer's first cast attempt, Cyclone extends the lockout, and Psychic Scream peels anyone on the priest. If the kill stalls, Ice Block / Barkskin / LoS to reset and re-open the CC chain.
Positioning
Mage and priest hug a pillar for LoS and to bait the enemy into breaking line for their own CC; the druid floats behind them where it can Cyclone and still reach both casters with Rejuvenation and Swiftmend. Keep the priest away from melee — it has no self-peel besides one Psychic Scream, so the druid and mage must Root, Nova, and Cyclone anything that trains it.
Vs. the meta
The Felhunter's Spell Lock and constant Fear wreck your setup — a locked school kills the Shatter window and a Fear scatters your CC chain. Bait Spell Lock with a fake cast before committing the real combo, save Cyclone for the shaman rather than the rogue, and Nature's Swiftness the druid through the DoT pressure. You need to land your kill fast before UA and rogue burst grind the priest down.
Two warriors plus a shaman will train your priest and ignore your CC through Berserker Rage and trinkets. Play deep behind the pillar, kite with Frost Nova, Roots, and Cyclone on a warrior, and don't force the burst — peel both warriors off the priest first, then delete the shaman or a warrior in a single Shatter window once they're controlled.
Gear requirements
- ▸All three need resilience; the priest and mage want stamina to survive cleave swaps, the druid stacks mana/int and mp5 for long games
- ▸Mage needs enough spell power for a lethal Shatter; priest wants spell power + spell haste to fit Mind Blast into the window
Tips
- •Fake-cast to bait Counterspell, Spell Lock, and Earth Shock before you commit the real Shatter combo.
- •Cyclone is your reset button on the healer — chain it into Sheep/Silence so no heal ever lands during the kill.
- •Save the mage's Water Elemental Freeze as a second Frost Nova to double your Shatter windows.
- •Never blow the full CC chain without the burst ready — CC without a kill just resets the enemy for free.
