Overview
Ret Paladin / Resto Shaman is the definitive TBC feast-or-famine burst comp. Everything is engineered around one explosive window: the Shaman drops Windfury Totem, pops Bloodlust, and the Paladin funnels Judgement of Command, Crusader Strike, and a trinket-boosted white swing into a single target while it's locked in Repentance or Hammer of Justice. When it connects, the target is simply gone before their healer finishes a cast.
The catch is that you have no Mortal Strike and no way to pressure a healer over time, so if the first go dies, you're grinding a losing mana war where the Shaman's cast-time heals get shredded by any competent interrupter. You are a scalpel, not a hammer. Win the setup or reset and try again with better positioning and totems down.
Win condition
You win by chaining crowd control into a burst window the enemy healer cannot answer. Open by getting Earth Shield and Windfury Totem down, then set up the kill: Repentance the enemy healer (or Hammer of Justice the DPS), swap onto the free target, and unload Bloodlust + trinket into Judgement of Command and Crusader Strike with Windfury proccing on your swings. Purge the target's absorbs and HoTs right before the burst so nothing eats it. If the healer isn't controlled, HoJ them mid-burst so your damage lands into a target that can't be topped. Everything must resolve inside roughly five seconds — that's your entire kill window.
Strengths
- +Ludicrous single-global burst when Windfury Totem, Bloodlust, and a trinket line up on a Judgement + Crusader Strike
- +Grounding Totem and Purge give real answers to caster teams, eating a key CC and stripping shields/HoTs off the kill target
- +Double dispel coverage: Shaman Purges offensively while the Paladin Cleanses and Blessing of Freedom peels roots and slows
Weaknesses
- −No Mortal Strike or healing debuff, so any matchup that survives the first burst window can out-heal you indefinitely
- −The Shaman's cast-time heals fold to sustained interrupts, and the Ret has no gap-closer once kited off the target
Cooldown timeline
Pre-game: Earth Shield on the Ret, Windfury and Tremor/Grounding totems placed for the opener. First contact: Judgement to apply pressure and force cooldowns, hold Bloodlust. Kill window: Repentance or HoJ the healer, Bloodlust + Windfury Totem + engineering trinket + Crusader Strike + Judgement of Command all inside one window. Keep Blessing of Freedom charged for the Ret to counter roots/slows, and save the Shaman's Nature's Swiftness + Healing Wave for the enemy's return burst. Grounding Totem is on cooldown rotation to eat Polymorph, Fear, or a key shock. If the go fails, disengage, re-drop totems, regen mana, and rebuild.
Positioning
The Shaman plays around line of sight and totem range, never standing where a caster can free-cast on him — pillar-hug and keep Grounding and Tremor totems within pickup range. The Ret stays glued to the kill target but peels back the instant the Shaman is pressured, using Hammer of Justice and Cleanse to buy heals. Against casters, force them off pillars where Grounding can't be juked; against melee, the Shaman kites through Earthbind and Frost Shock while the Ret trades. Keep the two of you close enough that Bloodlust and Windfury cover the Ret but not so stacked that you both eat AoE fear or a single cross-CC setup.
Vs. the meta
This is your nightmare matchup: the Mage kites the Ret forever with Frost Nova, Blink, and Polymorph while the Disc Priest interrupts every Shaman heal. Save Blessing of Freedom exclusively for Nova/roots and never waste it early. Use Grounding Totem to eat a Polymorph or Counterspell, Tremor to shrug the Priest's fear, and Purge the Priest's shields relentlessly. Your only real path is a Repentance-into-Bloodlust go on the Priest before they get Inner Focus / trinket up — if you can't kill in that first window, you likely lose the mana war, so play for one perfect setup rather than sustained pressure.
The Rogue restealths and controls your Shaman with kidney/blind chains while the Priest dispels Blessing of Freedom and peels. Pre-place Tremor for the Priest's fear and keep the Shaman near a pillar so restealth openers are limited. Cleanse and Blessing of Freedom the Shaman off crippling poison and cheap-shot follow-ups, and have the Ret ready to HoJ the Rogue the moment he commits to a burst. Purge the Priest's Power Word: Shield before you go, and time your kill window on the Rogue during a Blind/Vanish desync when the Priest is out of position or low on mana.
Gear requirements
- ▸Ret: Season 2 weapon (highest top-end damage you can get) plus stacked Strength/crit and enough resilience to survive return burst; an on-use damage/haste trinket is core to the kill window.
- ▸Shaman: prioritize resilience and Stamina to survive swaps, then +healing and mp5/Intellect for the mana war — Nature's Swiftness and a strong healing weapon/idol are non-negotiable.
Tips
- •Never blow Bloodlust on a target the enemy healer can freely cast on — land your Repentance or HoJ on the healer first, then burst the now-uncoverable DPS.
- •Purge is a kill button: strip Power Word: Shield, Earth Shield, and HoTs off the target in the same global you start your burst so nothing absorbs it.
- •Rotate Grounding Totem proactively to eat the enemy's most dangerous cast (Polymorph, Fear, Counterspell), not reactively after it lands.
- •Hold the Shaman's Nature's Swiftness + instant Healing Wave for the enemy's counter-burst, and keep Blessing of Freedom on the Ret purely to defeat kiting.
