Overview
This is a defensive attrition comp built around never losing and slowly starving the enemy team. The Holy Paladin is one of the tankiest healers in TBC — Blessing of Freedom shrugs off snares, Hand of Protection wipes a melee's whole game plan, Divine Shield buys a full mana-drink, and Cleanse strips the dots and poisons that would otherwise pressure you. Behind that wall the Frost Mage layers Polymorph, Frost Nova, Cone of Cold, and Counterspell to keep both enemies out of range and off your Paladin.
What you lack is a kill button. There is no Rogue opener, no PoM-Pyro nuke — your damage is a Shatter combo and chip while everything else is on lockdown. That makes Mana Burn your true win condition: every point you burn off the enemy healer is a point closer to a free kill. Against melee you are a nightmare to catch; against burst setup teams and drain comps you are racing a clock you did not set.
Win condition
You win one of two ways, and usually both at once. First, keep the enemy healer permanently uncomfortable: Counterspell their casts, Polymorph them off cooldown when your Paladin is topped, and stack Mana Burns whenever you are not needed for CC — burning a healer to zero ends the game with no damage required. Second, when their healer is locked (Poly, Counterspell lockout, or a Hammer of Justice from your Paladin), open a hard swap on the DPS: Frost Nova, Ice Lance, Frostbolt into a Shatter crit, Cone of Cold, second Ice Lance. If the swap does not kill, disengage with Blink and reset to the attrition plan — you are never forced to commit.
Strengths
- +Double crowd control — chained Polymorph, Frost Nova, and Counterspell lock out enemies for entire kill windows.
- +Mana Burn plus the deepest bubble/heal package in the bracket lets you win pure attrition games.
- +Near-immunity to melee pressure: Blink, Ice Block, Blessing of Freedom, and Hand of Protection reset any train.
Weaknesses
- −Very low raw damage — with no burst partner you can go minutes without a real kill threat.
- −Counterspell or a well-timed kick on the Mage collapses the whole control plan.
Cooldown timeline
Open by dropping Blessing of Freedom preemptively if you smell a melee train, and hold Ice Block and Divine Shield as your two hard resets — never both at once. Icy Veins comes out only when the enemy healer is already CC'd and you have a real Shatter window; wasting it into a full-health, full-mana team is throwing your only offense. Hand of Protection is your panic button for the Mage the instant a Rogue or Warrior sticks — it buys a clean Blink and re-CC. Trinket the first Hammer of Justice or Fear that threatens a kill, then bank Divine Shield + drink to refill mana in long games. Manage Water Elemental as a bonus Frost Nova target and extra Mana Burn body when the game goes past the two-minute drain phase.
Positioning
Play the pillars religiously — the Mage kites in wide arcs around a line-of-sight object so melee eat Frost Nova and casters lose their target mid-cast, while the Paladin heals from just behind the same pillar so no single caster can train both of you. Never let the Paladin get body-pulled into the open; a caught Holy Paladin gets kicked and killed. Keep the Mage and Paladin on opposite sides of the pillar so an enemy has to pick one to pressure, and use Blink to cross gaps rather than run them. In the Blade's Edge bridge and Nagrand's central pillars, force every fight around the LoS and let the enemy waste globals chasing.
Vs. the meta
This is your hardest matchup — they out-CC and out-burst you. The Rogue trains your Mage while their Mage kicks and Counterspells your Polymorphs, and a Blind + Sap can lock your Paladin out of a save. Pre-Freedom is useless against a Rogue, so lean on Hand of Protection on the Mage the moment Cheap Shot lands, then Blink and Ice Block to eat the burst. Cleanse Blind off your Paladin instantly, save Divine Shield for their cooldown burst (Adrenaline Rush/Blade Flurry window), and grind their Mage's mana with Mana Burn — Rogue/Mage has no healer, so any sustained damage on the Mage or a single connect on the Rogue after their cooldowns wins the long game.
A drain-and-outlast nightmare: the Warlock Life Drains and Curse of Tongues your Paladin while the Druid HoTs and cyclones your Mana Burns away. You cannot burn a team that heals through mana of its own, so shift to the kill plan — Counterspell and Polymorph the Druid, then hard-swap the Warlock with a Shatter combo while their healer is locked. Cleanse Curse of Tongues off the Paladin to keep your GCDs fast, spell-reflect nothing (they have instants), and use Ice Block to break Fear chains. Patience loses this one; you need a committed swap kill in a CC window, not the attrition game.
Gear requirements
- ▸Mage: Vengeful Gladiator's set for max resilience, prioritize spell hit to guarantee Polymorph/Counterspell land, and a high-spellpower weapon (Gladiator's Spellblade) for Shatter burst.
- ▸Paladin: stack resilience plus Intellect/mp5 for mana longevity in drain games, with enough spell power on the healing weapon and off-hand to make Flash of Light land hard under pressure.
Tips
- •Never Polymorph the target you are trying to kill — Poly heals 6% max HP per second. Sheep the healer or the off-target, and kill the person who is Frost Nova'd instead.
- •Bank Counterspell for the enemy healer's cast, not for damage — its lockout is the longest in the game and buys 8-10 seconds of free Mana Burn or a swap.
- •Cleanse is proactive: strip Curse of Tongues, poisons, and dots off your Paladin the instant they land so your heals and GCDs stay fast.
- •Hold Ice Block and Divine Shield as separate resets on separate threats — blowing both in the same panic leaves you naked for the next 3 minutes.
