Overview
Hunter/Disc Priest is built around two mana taps working in concert. The hunter keeps Aspect of the Viper up during downtime, weaves Viper Sting onto the healer, and uses Concussive Shot, Freezing Trap and pillars to stay at ideal range. The priest is not a passive backline healer here — Discipline's aggressive toolkit does half the offense through Mana Burn spam, offensive Dispel Magic to strip HoTs and shields, and Psychic Scream to peel and reset. Together they turn every game into a resource war the healer usually loses first.
The payoff is the Beast Mastery burst window. Once the enemy healer is low on mana or caught out of position, the hunter pops Bestial Wrath and The Beast Within to make the pet immune to crowd control, chains Kill Command and Intimidation, and the priest commits Power Infusion and hard casts to close. The comp asks for restraint: throw your burst too early against a full-mana healer and you have nothing left when the real kill window opens.
Win condition
You win through mana attrition capped by a burst finish. Maintain Viper Sting uptime on the enemy healer and let the priest Mana Burn between Power Word: Shield and Renew refreshes — the goal is to force the healer to LoS and drink, ceding tempo. When their pool dips or your Freezing Trap lands on the off-target, the hunter commits Bestial Wrath + The Beast Within, opens with Intimidation to stun, and pours Kill Command plus Steady/Arcane Shot into the kill target while the priest adds Power Infusion, Shadow Word: Death and Mana Burn to deny the last-second heal. Against a healer who refuses to burn, patience plus Scare Beast (vs. druids) and repeated traps eventually cracks them.
Strengths
- +Relentless dual mana pressure — Viper Sting plus Mana Burn drains a healer's pool faster than they can drink or LoS
- +A real burst window on demand: Bestial Wrath + The Beast Within turns the pet into an unpeelable, CC-immune wrecking ball behind Kill Command
- +Deep control kit — Freezing Trap, Intimidation stun, Concussive Shot and Psychic Scream let you dictate every opener and reset
Weaknesses
- −Melee that sticks to the hunter shuts the comp down — deadzone, stuns and Wing Clip pressure gut your damage and mana attrition plan
- −No hard swap-and-kill burst if the drain plan stalls; a mobile, well-positioned healer can outlast a sloppy Bestial Wrath window
Cooldown timeline
Bestial Wrath and The Beast Within (shared ~2 min) are your only true kill button — never blow it into a fresh healer. Intimidation (1 min) is your on-demand stun to open or interrupt a cast; pair it with the burst. Rapid Fire supplements damage during the window. On the priest, Pain Suppression (3 min) saves your hunter from a melee train, Power Infusion (3 min) is banked for the kill push, and Psychic Scream (baseline, ~30 s) is your emergency peel and reset. Freezing Trap has no cooldown but respects diminishing returns — stagger it with Intimidation and Scream so your CC chain doesn't overlap into resistance.
Positioning
The hunter lives in the 8–35 yard band and must respect the deadzone — too close and you can't shoot, too far and you fall out of range. Play off pillars so the priest can LoS enemy casters while you keep sightlines to the healer for Viper Sting and shots. Pre-place Freezing Traps in the lanes a melee will path through, and kite attackers through your trap rather than running blind. The priest should never share a pillar with the hunter against melee; stay split so a single charge or blind can't reach both of you, and use Psychic Scream the instant a melee closes the gap on the hunter.
Vs. the meta
This is your hardest matchup — the rogue erases your damage in the deadzone and stunlocks the hunter. Play ultra-defensively: pre-trap your own pillar corners, save Psychic Scream for the opener to break the stun chain, and Feign Death to drop combat and reset. The priest should Pain Suppression the hunter through the first stunlock. Keep Aspect of the Viper mana banked, kite the rogue into Freezing Trap, and only Mana Burn the priest when the rogue is trapped or feared — you win the long game if you survive the burst windows.
A Holy Paladin has the mana pool to shrug off your drain and the warrior will train your hunter relentlessly. Do not try to out-attrition the paladin's mana directly — instead kite the warrior with Concussive Shot, Wing Clip and traps to deny rage and Mortal Strike uptime, and force the paladin to LoS your Mana Burns. Bank Bestial Wrath for a clean burst on the warrior when Pain Suppression and a Freezing Trap on the paladin let you tunnel him. Scare tactics fail here; win by making the warrior useless, not the healer poor.
Gear requirements
- ▸Hunter: Season 2 Merciless Gladiator's ranged weapon and set for the resilience breakpoint, prioritizing agility and crit for pet-burst spikes; keep a mana pool deep enough to sustain Aspect of the Viper cycling.
- ▸Priest: full Merciless Gladiator's Investiture for resilience, then stack spell damage plus mana regen so Mana Burn and hard casts outlast the enemy healer through a long attrition game.
Tips
- •Keep Aspect of the Viper on during any downtime — a mana-starved hunter has no kill window, and the whole comp runs on your resource advantage.
- •Never open Bestial Wrath into a full-mana healer. It is a finisher, not an opener — earn the window with Viper Sting and Mana Burn first.
- •Stagger your CC: Intimidation, Freezing Trap and Psychic Scream all feed diminishing returns, so chain them on the same target instead of overlapping and wasting duration.
- •Use Feign Death aggressively to drop melee combat, reset traps, and dodge incoming casts — it is one of the strongest survival tools you have against a train.
