Overview
Hunter/Druid is a two-man control machine built around one idea: never let the enemy touch you and never let their healer drink. The Beast Mastery hunter is the engine — Aspect of the Hawk uptime, Frost Trap and Concussive Shot to peel any melee, and Viper Sting ticking the opposing healer dry. The Restoration druid is the spine — rolling Rejuvenation and Lifebloom to stay topped through poke, Cyclone to remove the enemy healer during kill windows, and Barkskin plus travel-form mobility so nothing pins her down. Together you form a kite that most comps simply cannot solve.
The win almost never comes from a clean opener. It comes ten to fifteen Viper ticks later, when the enemy healer is out of mana, their DPS is chipped from Serpent Sting and Arcane Shot, and you finally commit Bestial Wrath. This is a patience comp: you accept that early rounds go long, you trust your HoTs and your traps, and you close only when the resource math is already won. If you're the aggressor here, you're playing it wrong.
Win condition
You win on resources and CC, not on a burst gib. Keep Viper Sting rolling on the enemy healer from the opening — every tick is mana they never get back, and Serpent Sting on the kill target adds free pressure. Your druid Cyclones the healer during their drink attempts and during your commit. The kill itself lands in a single Bestial Wrath window: pop The Beast Within for CC immunity, Intimidation-stun the target with your pet, Kill Command plus a Steady Shot into an Aimed Shot, while the druid holds the enemy healer in Cyclone so no heal lands. If they trinket the stun, reset — you have infinite kite time and they don't have infinite mana.
Strengths
- +Infinite kiting — Frost Trap, Concussive Shot, Wing Clip, and Aspect of the Pack keep melee permanently out of range while you free-cast damage
- +Mana warfare — Viper Sting on the enemy healer plus Cyclone lockout wins any game that goes long
- +Layered CC with no DR overlap — Freezing Trap, Cyclone, and Intimidation stack into near-permanent healer control
Weaknesses
- −Low burst — outside a Bestial Wrath window you lack the raw damage to close a game before your CC chain breaks
- −Fragile to a swap — if a rogue or two melee stick the hunter, one broken kite can end the round instantly
Cooldown timeline
Open with Aspect of the Hawk and Viper Sting on the healer while the druid pre-HoTs the hunter. Drop Freezing Trap early to establish CC dominance and bait a trinket; save Frost Trap for when melee actually commits. Bestial Wrath plus The Beast Within is your only true burst window — hold it until the enemy healer is Cycloned or low on mana, roughly the first big lull after their initial cooldowns are spent. Intimidation pairs with the Bestial Wrath swap for the stun. Deterrence and Feign Death are your panic buttons if a rogue or warrior sticks you; the druid holds Barkskin and Nature's Swiftness plus Healing Touch for the moment a swap gets scary. Innervate goes on the druid the instant she dips — never let her run dry before their healer does.
Positioning
Play the pillars as a two-node kite: hunter on one side maintaining line for shots, druid on the other so a single charge or stealth opener can't reach both of you. Never stand still — Auto Shot and Steady Shot fire fine on the move for a hunter who strafes correctly, and standing still is how rogues and warriors delete you. Keep the enemy melee funneled through your Frost Trap and Concussive Shot so they eat maximum slow. The druid kites in a wide arc using travel form between casts, dropping HoTs on the run and only hardcasting under Barkskin. Force the enemy healer into the open to land Cyclone, and keep a pillar between yourself and any caster trying to CC your hunter.
Vs. the meta
This is your hardest game — a rogue that sticks the hunter through a stunlock can end the round before your CC comes online, and the Disc priest dispels Viper Sting and fears off the rogue. Trap on cooldown to break stealth setups, and pre-emptively Freezing Trap the rogue before he can open. Feign Death to drop combat and reset his stun timers, and use Deterrence to survive the burst window. Have the druid Cyclone the priest during the rogue's Cold Blood window so no shield lands, and Hibernate is useless here — instead spend Cyclone and roots to peel the rogue off the hunter. Grind the priest's mana with relentless Viper Sting; if you survive the first two setups, the resource game swings hard your way.
The Holy paladin has the mana to outlast a sloppy drain, so this is a discipline test. Viper Sting the paladin every cast and refresh it religiously — a paladin with no mana can't Cleanse your stings or heal the rogue. Keep the rogue slowed and trapped; every second he's in a Freezing Trap or Frost Trap is a second he isn't on your hunter. Bait Blessing of Freedom with an early trap, then land the real Freezing Trap once it's down. Save Cyclone for the paladin's Holy Light casts, and only commit Bestial Wrath once the paladin is CC'd or low. Patience wins — you have more kite than they have mana.
Gear requirements
- ▸Hunter: prioritize resilience to survive rogue/warrior swaps, then a high top-end ranged weapon (Crossbow of Relentless Strikes / Sunfury bow) for Aimed and Steady Shot damage; Agility and crit scale your Bestial Wrath window
- ▸Druid: stack resilience and stamina to live through swaps, then Intellect and mp5 (Vengeful Gladiator's regalia) so you win the mana war you're built to fight — spellpower is a distant third
Tips
- •Refresh Viper Sting before it falls off, not after — a dropped drain hands the enemy healer a full mana regen tick and undoes minutes of work
- •Freezing Trap does not diminish with Cyclone, so chain them on the healer for near-permanent lockout during your kill window
- •Never blow Bestial Wrath as an opener; it's your only CC-immune burst, so save it for when the enemy healer is already Cycloned or dry
- •Keep your pet on the healer with Growl off — pet damage plus Intimidation stun is a huge chunk of your control and pressure, and a dead pet is a dead comp until you can revive
